I wanted to share the following poem shared from someone I advocate for who became a very good friend over the years. I cherish our 6 AM conversations, talking about life, treatment options, mindset, family, art, food, wellness, life and love. She has taught me so much. She and the countless patients I've been privileged to advocate for over the past decade, taught me the meaning of life and what matters. They know that we are in this together, always!

"Stage 4 Cancer" doesn't define you, if you don't let it, which is obviously a challenge but it can be done. I've seen it. It starts with getting rid of the moniker "Stage 4" which is a great disservice, as there are varying degrees of "Stage 4."

Telling someone they are "Stage 4" can mean very different things. I've advocated for and navigated the care of "Stage 4" pancreatic cancer patients who are now NO Evidence of Disease (defying the 3 month survival predictions). We are now organizing a group of my favorite Superstar Team of physici...

Terrible photo of me but don’t care because Dr. Sims, MD, PhD is a hero and legend. We first became friends when I reached out to her after Parkland, both wanting to do something. She’s an internationally renowned trauma surgeon and scientist who was a Professor of Surgery at Harvard, Mass General, and Penn and soon to be Chief of Trauma Surgery, Burn and Critical Care at Ohio State.

She pioneered studies on artificial blood, implemented domestic violence screening programs in trauma units and is a diversity in medicine advocate. She was pivotal in, This Is Our Lane, trauma surgeons speaking out on gun violence. She also won awards for being a pioneering female surgeon. Proud to call her a friend! She is the embodiment of a change-maker, a force for all things good in the world!

I will never forget meeting Toni Morrison and her inscribing Beloved among other books. I told her about my nationally renowned AP English teacher, Dr. Elfie Israel, who had us read Beloved and analyze every sentence. She also assigned Maya Angelou, William Faulkner, George Carlin, Langston Hughes, Lenny Bruce, Shakespeare, T.S. Elliot, Nikki Giovanni, Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain, Lincoln among other rebellious luminaries. She dared us to think outside the box, write and rewrite endlessly, analyze, question and revolt against injustice. Toni Morrison was captivated by a teacher who could be so bold and daring.

Elfie, I hope you and Toni are sharing a glass of whiskey with Maya, while discussing great books, poems and art! "LOVE" always, which serendipitously is the name of the book Toni Morrison was discussing when we met.

BRCA Is Personal! So, as a PSA: Thanksgiving is a perfect time to discuss family history and genetic testing. I've advocated for hundreds of cancer patients during the past 10 years, many are BRCA+. BRCA mutations devastate generations, especially Ashkenazi Jews, as 1 in 40 will test positive for a BRCA mutation.

My mom’s life-long best friend died of breast cancer in her early 30s, tragically never seeing her toddler grow up. It was a truly profound moment, when I took that toddler (now a young woman who is BRCA+) to one of my favorite world renowned surgeons. But there’s a happy ending to her story, because through science, surgery, education, genetic testing and advocacy, she gets to rewrite her story. Unlike her mom, her toddler gets to keep her mother. That is the embodiment of purpose and meaning and it is what drives me to advocate for cancer patients daily and to educate, inform and fundraise for life-saving research. She got to "Rewrite Her Story!"

It is why I am so proud to be...

Health Coach Jaye believes strongly in people pursuing their Passionate Purpose, Meaning and JOY, whether it is for 15 minutes a day, an hour a day, on the weekends or full time. In fact, she believes and coaches that JOY = PASSIONATE PURPOSE + MEANING. She helps people find JOY in every day life which in turn changes their lives. In addition to her work coaching cancer patients to help find their "Why," which propels them out of bed each day to fight for the beauty life still has to offer. By harnessing the power of positive thinking, meditation, finding purpose, meaning, JOY and your "Why" and turning it into a force for good, Jaye has changed the lives of children, teens and adults of all ages giving them renewed hope and inspiration while also doing good in the world and even creating their own businesses.

As a bibliophile and life-long "quote person," the following are some of Health Coach Jaye's favorite inspirational quotes from Dr. Viktor Frankl's seminal book, Man's Search for...

My old standby, quickest dish you can make. Cauliflower rice, brussels sprouts, organic chicken chopped up. Season with avocado oil or extra virgin olive oil and Himalayan Sea Salt. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes. Add organic shredded cheese (any will do) and sprinkle with parmesan. Bake until browned. Most ingredients are frozen and can be purchased reasonably.

I am so blessed to have befriended and advocated for so many Stage 4 cancer patients (and I hate that term!). Can we just get rid of discussing stages because the mindset associated with it is very destructive and unproductive.

If you want to learn about the meaning of life, talk to them. They are some of the strongest people I have ever known. They teach me what life is about and how meaning, passionate purpose, mindset and JOY is how you not only survive the unimaginable but thrive.

I promise to fight for you always. You gave me the gift of life - learning what life is truly about and finding your “Why” that gets you out of bed each day to fight for all that life still has to offer.
